Fuel Cell debacle

So I had been thinking about installing a new fuel delivery system in my 74 truck. The truck came with 2 16 gallon saddle tanks, only one of which is now connected. In addition to that, the fuel sender no longer works and my fuel gauge isn't working. On top of even that, the saddle tanks are AWFUL to fill. The tanks sit about knee level, and the filler neck comes vertical out of the tank, makes an abrupt 90 degree bend, and then exits horizontally out the bedside. What all this means is that when I fill up at the pump, I have to crouch over, hold the gas pump nozzle while pulling the vapor shield back and then pump slowly so gas doesn't flow back out the neck. Just awful. That engineer should probably be fired.

So I want to remove the two saddle tanks and replace the fuel system with a new one. I can't decide though between finding a stock gas tank with in-tank pump and running fuel through the stock hard lines, or going with a full blown fuel cell. Both would be mounted under the bed, and I'd probably just cut a hole in the bed for the filler.

Now I have a fuel cell question though. I happened upon a nice condition, full blown racing fuel cell from FuelSafe (valued at $850 new, so I could probably get $600 for it if I sold it). I don't really want to use this tank though, because it's set up to run off a mechanical pump, and doesn't have a fuel sender. Plus it only has a 15 gallon capacity and I'd probably want more. What I really would like though would be one of Aeromotive's fuel cells that comes loaded with an in tank pump and pre-filter. Problem though is those cost about $850.

So if you were in my place oppo, what would you do? Get a junkyard tank, run the racing cell, or sell the cell I have and get an Aeromotive tank?

$600-850 for a gas tank is awfully steep unless you need the added benefits of a fuel cell...

Possibly true. But that then poses the question of how and where do I find a fuel tank? Junkyards would be a good first place to look, but I wouldn't even know where to start for tanks.

Is there anyway to only use one saddle tank?

So here is my idea, and I've had the same for my car.

Use the fuel cell you have, mount it somewhere above the saddle tank, have a drain (probably 8 AN or larger) run from the fuel cell to the saddle tank. This adds the benefit of the fuel cell, the capacity of the saddle+cell, and ease of filling up because you just fill up the fuel cell and it drains down.

Hmmm interesting idea! Yea as it is now only on saddle tank is hooked up.

But for complexity's sake, it'd probably be easiest to start completely over and do a new fuel system.

By the way, I had this idea because my fuel neck is also extremely flawed and doesn't allow air to vent properly, therefor the exhaust fumes coming out as I fill up actually shut off the gas pump every two seconds.

Agreed. Most definitely. I would only foresee a few issues, such as the fuel level sender obviously being out of the picture, and complexity of the setup being a PITA later on.

Can't you re-rout the fuel neck?

Yea, I could. But that doesn't solve the problem of the non-working fuel sender (I know, easy replacement). But I'm looking at the problems as an opportunity to upgrade. More fuel capacity, more reliable components, and easier filling are all in my sights.

LMP parts or a number of sites.

I have no idea of the costs, and whether you need the bed space, but what about rigging up one of those fuel tanks that logger and the like use? 80ga could be handy...
